A new kids photography exhibition by Sonya Hurtado opens on July 23rd at the V&A Museum of childhood in London’s Bethnal Green.
The exhibition titled ‘Tales’ consists of a series of twelve images which explore the imaginary world of childhood.
A world where children encounter and must navigate complex feelings of isolation, fear and despair. Set in the context of fairy tales and children’s stories, the images are conceived almost like paintings, full of colour and vibrancy.
With inspiration from surrealism, film and much more, the manipulation of shadow, light and colour creates a playful and at times almost sinister atmosphere.
Manipulation is a key element of Sonya’s work and is frequently seen in her fabulous shoots for the British kids fashion label Raspberry Plum, the most recent for fall 2016 sees the children as astronauts floating in a strange dream room.
