Winter 2020 kids fashion at CIFF Youth was exhibited last week in Copenhagen Fashion Week.
The theme of sustainability is high in Denmark and the Fashion Week itself is making concerted efforts, CPHFW recently announced that designers wishing to show on the catwalk and be considered part of the fashion week need to have sustainability practices in place by three years time or they will not be permitted to show.
For me this started at the hotel Bella Sky, where the waste bin in my room was divided into three sections for paper, bottles and general waste. Not something I’ve ever seen before!
The CIFF DK fair also had a large installation by Lee Jeans showing recycled deadstock past season clothing where visitors had help from machinists to make themselves hats or other items from discarded or preloved clothing.
CIFF Youth carried on the theme with an installation titled Eco Label Jungle featuring all the different certification schemes and what each actually means, a great educational exercise for buyers and press alike which I’ve posted on my Instagram.
It was at CIFF Youth one year ago when I realised that sustainability was actually becoming a requirement especially in kids clothing and it is slowly becoming adopted across the board by new and existing exhibitors.
If there was one big story at CIFF Youth it was a colour one, all things spice held sway with many stands featuring the deep oranges, saffron yellows and burn rust colours of Eastern spices. These are mixed with berry reds and green giving an overall feel of a New England forest at the height of its autumnal colour.
The jumpsuit is a popular trend here and for Nordic winters comes now as a padded and quilted all in one zip up utility garment. Organic cotton is a must, nearly every exhibitor has at least some of their collection in organic cotton and quite a few are experimenting with new yarns recycled from plastic bottles or other waste.
Other kids fashion trends popular in Copenhagen are textured surfaces with faux shearling and quilting much in prominence and an 80’s vibe with chunky sweaters in random knits or with punk style loose fluffy large stitches. Prints are discreet florals echoing the autumnal colour range.
