CPH Kids Copenhagen fashion fair for winter 2012 trends in children’s fashion

Some of my favourite labels are at the CPH Kids fashion fair in Copenhagen and it is always a pleasure to visit with a relaxed friendly atmosphere and a strong stylish vibe.

This edition saw a new children’s fashion magazine FROM launched in conjunction with the fair which has a strong teen element to it and a Pop up Shop by Normann Copenhagen with cushions, bowls and other small transportables.

The trends of last winter in kids fashion are still holding strong, things like woodland prints, native animals for prints and graphics, Nordic patterned sweaters. There is a move to gold and black lurex here as seen also in Florence instead of silver and a great tone of copper for boots by Bisgaard.

Tones overall are more subdued in the fashion brands with lots of grey and grape or berry shades, knits are still very relevant and flourescent touches still look fresh. The traditional Scandinavian print labels such as H.J.O.R.T.H. Copenhagen, Katvig, Ej sikke lej and Smafolk are still using bright colour though as their core buyer loves the style and won’t be wanting any changes there.

CIFF KIDS Copenhagen, new trends for children’s fashion spring/summer 2012

One of the big surprises for at CIFF KIDS this season was the sudden fashion styling from Hummel. A previously unlikely contender for a trend report with some pretty nice trainers has branched out into a Bling side to their sports collection with metallic zig zag strips, flouro touches and bold graphics on some of their basic pieces.

There were new additions from the company Aya Naya who are now represented in the UK and although the denim line Frankie and Liberty won’t be in the UK for next summer it is notable for its bleached denim pieces. There were nicely presented trend direction window boxes and at the entrance to the main adults Ciff fair a selection of Pantone colour threads of the season which was a great touch. Buyers could pull lengths of thread off for their own later references. The trends video of the catwalk presentation is now online on the CIFF website here.

Hats off! Winter 2011 inspiration for kids fashion, get a hat.

There are all sorts, trilby’s, beanies, wooly pull ons, caps, trapper hats you name it there is a style to suit every shape for next winter.

Plus with Ski style and mountain influences a hot trend D&G have even produced their own ski helmet and goggles for kids.

Chanel eat your heart out, you didn’t get there first on this one!

Seriously though a hat is often the small accessory that absolutely makes the outfit on kids, they are really cute and when the weather is really cold make sure that not too much heat escapes from those growing brains.

Copenhagen fashion week CIFF Kids children's fashion for winter 2011

Of the two children’s trade fairs held during Copenhagen Fashion Week CIFF Kids is the older more established one catering for the bigger brands and as such does attract a certain buyer looking for volume buys. This ensures some of the biggest children’s fashion names from the Nordic countries still exhibit there including Oilily, Mini a Ture, Noa Noa and Hummel.

It is not a great fair for trend directions as most of the offering tends to be mainstream but there was some great footwear present which I will post later and a few exhibitors from overseas represented by agents here that are worth catching up with if you didn’t see them at Pitti Bimbo or Playtime Paris.

When visited in conjunction with CPH Kids which I will report on tomorrow it will give a good overview of the next season’s trend directions.

The other main fashion fair last week in Copenhagen was Ciff Kids. Larger and more commercial than CPH Kids it offers a mainstream selection with a few more individual labels as well. See a video of the fashion show here.

There was an emphasis here on bolder colour and prints in a tropical theme as well as softer sorbet pastels and lace trims, many of the exhibitors I had already seen at Pitti Bimbo in Florence or Bubble London so there was not so much that was new and trend led to discover.
