Amazing kids photographic project showing gender differences, The Pink and Blue project

Thanks to the Arts blog Chicqero for alerting me to this brilliant project by Korean photographer JeongMee Yoon exploring the gender preferences for the colours pink and blue.

It began when his daughter started to only want to wear pink clothes and play with pink toys at 5 years old, he discovered the universal truth that no matter what their ethnicity so did many other girls and boys only wanted or preferred blue and so began the project in 2005 which is still ongoing today.

The pictures are an amazing exploration of what is available in today’s world and not only show the gender colour preference but just how many things today’s consumerist children acquire in their young lives.

Cool kids Photography today – Christophe Kutner for Spanish and Brazilian Vogue

This is a very cool set of pictures by Christophe Kutner for Vogue Spain and Brazil of family lifestyle living.

From New York and with an extensive high fashion portfolio Christophe doesn’t photograph kids very often but when he does the results are great.

Book day today, The invention of Hugo Cabret, stunning illustrations by Brian Selznick

In fact the illustrations are so stunning and beautiful that my son has refused to see Hugo the movie because he loves this book so much it would spoil it for him and in his words, it can’t possibly be as good.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret takes the form of a graphic novel and has a storyboard style to the illustration so I can see why it seemed ideal for a movie version, the story is engaging in its own right but it is the drawing which really shines, in pencil and charcoal simple lines which give a dense and dark feeling, the faces really shine and the landscapes are intricate and very realistic.

Illustrator and writer Brian Selznick has form for the weird and wonderful as the author of another of my son’s favourites as he was growing up, The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins.

Kids smoking in fashion shots from Flavourwire

I don’t know how they found these but some very freaky pictures from Flavourwire of Kids smoking in fashion shots by photographer Frieke Janssens who is based in Belgium and claims the series was inspired by the recent smoking bans there as well as pictures of a two year old nicotine addict from Indonesia. More on the story at Flavourwire who found it at  Neatorama.

So is is just sensationalist work? There is a video link which shows although the kids are actually holding the cigarettes, and goodness knows how they found parents who would allow offspring top do that, they are only blowing out air, so some puffs have been added afterwards and the cigarettes were made of cheese, so is it art or just pure controversy?

I expect these to be all over the web soon.

Brooklyn Flea market, great for vintage kids chairs and toy’s and some cute children’s fashion too.

Venturing over the river is not something many visitors to Manhattan do and with good reason as it can be hard to get a taxi back again and the trains can be a hairy ride but having taxied over to the Brooklyn Flea market at Kent and North 6th St I discovered a great way to get there.

The Flea market is situated on the banks of the East River with Manhattan views and is right next to the landing stage for the new NY Waterway Ferry service from East 34th St to Brooklyn. As well as the easiest journey you also get a fantastic view of the Manhattan skyline.

The Flea itself is fairly upmarket with vintage traders. lots of food stalls and new small traders making their own merchandise, great for vintage kids chairs, books and toys and also look out for re-worked vintage fabric kids clothes from Dolls and Robots , whacky T-shirts for kids and adults from Gnome Enterprises, and cute soft toys  from Kate Durkin.

For those so inclined there is a good selection of animal trophy heads too! Another goos point, it doesn’t start till 10.00am so you don’t have to haul yourself up out of bed too early, in fact I was there at 10.30 and stall holders were still setting up.
